Flexible schedule. It may sound like this job will allow you switch up your schedule as needed, to accommodate your personal life. Sounds lovely. But that is a luxury you only truly get when you work for yourself. What they are saying is that they want YOU to be flexible by being available whenever they need. They want to be able to change your schedule from week to week as it suits them. I hope you don’t need Wednesday nights off for your kids soccer or your Pilates class. That will be frowned upon. The only time you truly have a flexible schedule is when you are your own boss!
Team player. What it sounds like they are looking for is someone who will work well with their co-workers. Help out when needed. Yes, this is a great quality for an employee to have, but what they really want is someone who will pick up the slack of their fellow employees and do the jobs that management themselves don’t want to do. They want people who are willing to do the work of more than one person for no additional pay. They don’t really care how it gets done as long as it gets done and they are not the ones doing it.
Ability to multitask. This goes along with the previous one. Yes, at any job you need some ability to do more than one thing at a time. But when they put this normal ability that most people have to walk and chew gum at the same time into a job posting, what they are really asking you to do is an unreasonable amount of multiple tasks for a singular pay.
Language like “ROCKSTAR” or “SUPERSTAR”. Are you auditioning for a band or something? This language is not only lame, but it’s meant to dupe you. They are trying to get you to come to the table with the mindset that because you have a lot to offer and can do many things, that you should give them your all, regardless of what they have to give you. “I’m a superstar! I’ll jump though your hoops!”. They are setting the stage for you to enter into employment with them, making big promises of spectacularness, so they can continually try to get more and more out of you because you, promised to be a rockstar. The jobs that do this the most are the ones that most people don’t stay at. Those sales jobs that have unrealistic goals or those positions where the job duties include an insane level of multi-tasking and team-playering.
Final example, though I could go on all day…
Must have bachelors degree. I’ve seen so many job postings with high requirements like college degrees, years of experience, etc. and then it turns out the pay is minimum wage or close to it. Excuse me, but if you want a college degree you must pay for one.
And the nonsense has started before you even walk in the door. They’ve got you promising to be it all and give it all and what will you get in return? Probably a lot of disappointment. These companies don’t care about you. Only you will treat yourself the way you deserve to be treated. It is easier than you think to be your own boss (while helping others I might add) and live your life the way you deserve to.
All this before you even get the job. And it doesn’t get better once you work there.
