Herbal Secrets Shared with the Early Settlers  

When the European colonist came to North America, they brought herb seeds, not knowing what they would find there. Some of those plants were calendula, chamomile, dandelion, lavender, and plantain.

The Native Americans were quick to share their knowledge of the medicinal benefits of naturally growing North American herbs.

Here are some Native American herbs and their traditional medicinal uses.

Black cohosh Actaea racemosa female problems such as hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms PMS, lack of menstruation, rheumatism, fever, pain

California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)-calming sleep aid, the pollen was used cosmetically.

Echinacea(Echinacea purpurea)-immunity, colds, sore throats. It’s still used for those ailments today.

Gingerroot (Asarum canadense)-earaches, ear infections, upset stomachs

Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)-used to enhance sex drive.

Mint-Mentha arvensis-digestive problems

Nettle Urtica dioica-skin ailments, prevents miscarriage and stimulates the release of breast milk

Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium)-appetite stimulant

Red clover (Trifolium pratense)-asthma and other respiratory problems

Saw palmetto Serenoa repens-libido and UTI’s in men (urinary tract infections)

Herbs were not only used for healing and food. They were also used as perfume, cosmetics, to dye leather, to spiritually protect, to clear negative energy, to prevent lightning strikes, to prevent nightmares, to attract and keep a mate, as a contraceptive, to ward off snakes, and to ensure good hunting.
