Hibiscus Tea

Serve hot or cold.

This tea (tisane) is commonly made from Hibiscus acetosella or Hibiscus sabdariffa.

Remove all green parts of the flower.

Remove the pistil (optional).

Ingredients:

1 cup fresh flowers or 1/4 cup dried flowers

1 quart of water

honey to taste

lemon or lime to taste

If flowers are fresh, gently wash and rinse.

Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat. Add flowers. Steep for 5-15 minutes, then strain out flowers. Hibiscus is slightly bitter so add honey and lime. Honey also acts as a preservative. Serve hot or chill and serve.

The many health benefits of hibiscus

Studies show hibiscus may be responsible for a reduction in weight, body fat, and BMI (body mass index).

It’s antibacterial action inhibits E.coli (food poisoning) and several other bacteria.

It reduces the spread of cancer cells and inhibits its growth in test tube studies.

It increases HDL, lowers LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides in studies with diabetic patients.

Placebo based studies show it can lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

One study showed it has liver protecting properties and may decrease incidence of liver disease.
