Mojitos, Juleps, Smashes

Cocktails made with white rum and muddled herbs.

The difference between Juleps and Smashes (Smash-ups)

Smashes are Juleps made with muddled herbs. Juleps may be made with or without muddled herbs. All Smashes are Juleps but not all Juleps are Smashes. Juleps are normally made with bourbon while Smashes are made with either rum, bourbon or gin.

Mojito Recipe

1 1/2 oz of white rum

Spearmint muddled (crushed)

Lime juice

2 tbls. white sugar or other sweeteners.

1/2 cup of club soda

Add all ingredients, shake and strain-some people choose not to strain. Add ice and then mint sprigs as a garnish.

Benefits of Spearmint

Authentic Mojito’s are made with Mentha x Villosa but any spearmint or other mint can be used.

Spearmint tea relaxes muscles, reduces stress, improves memory, improves digestion, reduces nausea and abdominal pain, helps balance hormones, reduces inflammation, and is a powerful antioxidant helping to prevent free radical damage and cancer.

Some studies show rum in moderate doses may help prevent erectile dysfunction, increase life span, prevent cancer risk especially kidney cancer (50%), increase bone density, prevent blocked arteries, lower cholesterol, reduce muscle pain, normalize blood sugar, act as an antiseptic, mild sedative, and may have an antibacterial effect. Alcohol in higher doses can be extremely detrimental to health and for some people any amount of alcohol is contraindicated.

Always consult with your medical doctor first especially if you have diabetes, liver disease, have been diagnosed with any disorder or are taking any medication even over the counter medications. Do not take if you are under 21 years of age. Always consult with your medical doctor before including alcohol in your diet.
